I have an R6 with an R as a backup. I want to trade the R for either the 6 Mark ii or the R5, but not sure which way to go. I mainly shoot wildlife and travel photography. A big part of me wants the updated tracking. Another part of me wants the megapixels from the r5. throughts

how does the focus compare to sony a7IV ?

The best AF breakdowns I’ve seen are @ Steve Perry’s channel as he specializes in wildlife. He has extensive breakdowns of the A1 and Z8/9 and has tested the Z6iii for a short period as well. His take is the A1 and Z8/9 go back and forth depending on the scene but are extremely close these days after Nikon’s basically been constantly refining the AF system. He uses the Z9 more because of the Nikon Telephoto lenses which have the built in TC. Jared has done a good job calling out the flaws in Nikon’s system. I do think it looks like they’re very very close now, but Sony seems to have the edge on the ease of use as the Nikon’s you do need to use specific settings to get the most out of it. I have the Z8/Zf and they’re excellent but you need to know when to use the right mode. Sony looks easier still for now. I have no doubt Nikon will just continue this refinement until there is no difference or it’s better. You really can’t go wrong with any Canon/Sony or Nikon with the latest generation AF though. I wish Canon had weather sealed options that were outside of L models though. Sony and Nikon have an advantage if you don’t want to spend L money for weather sealing.

on sony a7c this lems is fantastic. Nikon will do good now that Tamron convert their zoom to Nikon. Now there is the 50-300 VC with more range and stabilization OR the bigger and heavier 50-400 VC, soon these will be available on Nikon if it is not already done. AND the 17-28 f2.8, the 28-200, the 70-180 f2.8, the 28-75 g2 f2.8. all fantaSTIC.

Thanks! I watch this video for the second time and during the second viewing, Nikon came with a NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR. I agree the extra reach is worth it.

For me, after finally ditching Sony for its still awful colour & contrast rendition in Lightroom, Nikon has been absolutely AMAZING! My only 2 brands currently due to colour and skintones are Fuji and Nikon. I might actually prefer Nikons colour (shocking), but most importantly, compared to my a7s3 and a74, the z8 has been an upgrade, the af is AMAZING. But, Nikon has some slower lenses, that wont keep up with erratic running kids (35 1.8, 50 1.8)…you can still do it, but hitrate drops to 80%…the 2.8 Zoom however basically never misses

As a z6ii owner, im jealous lol this is what i wanted Nikon to be when they made rev2, but at this point im going to now wait for the Z7iii. People say this will be a top seller, the Z7iii will be the new new best seller lol

I wonder if some of those misses of the people up close are the minimum focusing distance or just the autofocus of some of these longer lenses

Every test I see is shot WFO in decent lighting conditions. It's not a real world test for many working pro's unless your shoot in in low light ( like an evening party environment) AND trying to shoot at a stop other than wide open! You're often called on to shoot groups of people eat and have to stop down to 5.6-ish to keep them all sharp. This is where all the Nikon mirrorless that I own have come up short when compared to Canon and Sony.

I am really glad they fixed the foreground/background issue. I have been limping along with a Z5 for years and that was one of the major things keeping from upgrading and even made me consider switching brands. Going to give the Z6iii a shot.

Seems to stick pretty good though the 3:30 mark is maybe something to be worried about. Of course every camera messes up to follow focus sometimes but its 2024… It should stick like a glue and react fast of changing objects.

I have used this lens (along with 35mm f1.8 viltrox) yesterday on the dance floor. It is really, really good (on Z6II), my camera was basically seeing in the dark! (AF-C wide box with eye detect). Amazing lenses really

Really respect, your honest analysis of our 6Zs/Z6IId, unlike those with "fan-boy-itis"...symptoms of fan-boy-itis include tunnel vision, confusion, illusions of grandeur, and minor case of constipation...that sensor shield would have made this the camera I wanted, since I bought into the Nikon mirrorless system...that and smaller lenses.

Have the Z9 and pre-ordered the Z6III. Needed a smaller full frame camera for travel and the flip out screen will be perfect for me for video.

Nice editing, distorted gated guitar plays while the subject was lost at 2:23. I just need to the Z6III to be 50% better than the II's and more predictable. I've used the Z7II (over a year,) Z8 (one month), and ZF (one month). When there is no contrast Nikon AF gets confused. A quick nudge on the focus ring helps. It was worse with Dynamic and less so with Wide (L People) which is my favorite mode. If I use 3D I use targeted/manual subject selection (works like Sony/Canon). I NEVER use full area/auto subject detection. i love the new AF features and EVF, but I could shoot pretty well with a D200/D300/D500 without all the fancy tricks. Kind of like driving an old car versus a modern car or even e-bikes. For me, Nikon images need the least amount of editing of all the systems. As long as I can see that I'm out of focus in that fancy new EVF, I think it will be an improvement.

With the Z6iii hitting this week, this lens fits squarely into that “prosumer” market segment. 👍🏽

Hello jared if i want to use EF 70-200 with the canon R5, will I lose frame per second ?

Any reasons on using 3d tracking for the baseball and boxing shoot? Does it work better than the small box af modes?

If worse comes shove focusing wise due to the "lower" shutter speed, spray and pray would be a work around would'nt it? Also if you're increasing your eyesso wouldn't it be better to increase your apperture (to lessen the noise) or does that make AF more difficult? Sorry for the newbie question, but thus far I can only figure out Manual mode. When I try to use the automatic modes the camera puts setting I can't figure out 😅...

Jared is talking about the Z6III and I just got a D700 that needs some TLC. New grips, new memory card door, but it works. All for $150. :)

OK, you sold me. The $300 prime lens I've been eyeing _is_ budget by comparison.

Lens is nice but does not reach 400mm. I own a Tamron 70 - 300mm. I tested the 70 - 300mm which got me much closer to my subject at 300mm than the 18 - 400mm did at 400mm. I returned it. Horrible. If you want a 400mm lens I do not recommend this lens.

Good for you Nikon users, Im a Canon owner, I've had this AF for four years now and with the new R1 and R5 coming Im sure they'll take it to the next level.

Nikon have made some serious progress since the introduction of the Z9, but it’s all so late, with many Nikon shooters moving systems. Both Nikon and Canon entered the mirrorless pro consumer market together, and both proved to be duds when compared to Sony’s focus and tracking performance. Canon quickly responded and introduced new cameras with superb focus performance Nikon just updated to Z7ii and Z6ii with little performance improvement. Yes they’ve caught up now but years have gone by with dissatisfied customers, such a wasted opportunity.
